WMPeople: Stephen secures new leading Specials role

A volunteer who joined policing in his teens has gone on to become one of the most senior members of our Special Constabulary.

Stephen Byrne started as a Special at the age of 18 and now, 16 years later, has been appointed as our Deputy Chief Officer.

He spent the first three years as a volunteer officer in Nottingham before transferring over to the West Midlands where he’s progressed through the ranks.

The married father-of-two is a quality improvement co-ordinator at a college during the day and a Special at night. He says it’s a privilege to be part of making a difference within our communities.

Stephen was a Special Chief Inspector for the past two years, and Special Inspector for seven years, before taking the plunge and going for his new position.

The 34-year-old said: “I applied for the role because I want to give something back to the colleagues and force which has supported me.

“Being part of the Special Constabulary helps with my own development and it provides some wonderful experiences. I have met some amazing people over the years.

“I’ve worked in operations, CMPG and neighbourhoods but being able to support colleagues across all areas of policing is the best place to be.

“I’m looking forward to getting stuck in; I really want to help the special constabulary grow. I’ve had a fantastic experience and I want to share that with others. Opportunities for Specials is just phenomenal.”

Assistant Chief Constable Mark Payne said Stephen’s appointment is a great result for WMP.

He added: “This was a very competitive selection process, but Stephen shone throughout it.

“I am delighted that the Special Constabulary will have a new Deputy Chief Officer who has some really exciting ideas for the future.”

Stephen will now help shape the future of our Special Constabulary. He’ll also represent the force at local, regional and national level, championing the opportunities for our Specials.
