Selection Process

Our initial selection stages have been designed to ensure you understand exactly what we’re looking for from our Direct Entry Inspectors – and to help us to gauge whether you are a good fit for the role. For these reasons, it is intentionally rigorous, and perhaps a little bit different from what you may be used to.

Overview of the Selection Process

Stage 1 – National Application Form – To be considered for the Direct Entry Programme candidates will complete the online National Application Form. Candidates must meet the national eligibility criteria before completing the application form itself. This is conducted through a series of questions online. Candidates should note that alongside national eligibility criteria, forces may have their own specific eligibility criteria. When applying for the West Midlands there will be some signposting for you to bypass the competency questions on the application form. This is because we want to assess you slightly differently – please don’t worry about this, there will be plenty of opportunity for you to show why you are right for the role.

Stage 2 – In-Force Sift – our sift process consists of a video interview. Once we have checked you meet the initial eligibility for the programme we will send you a link to our online portal where you will find some pre-recorded interview questions, asked by a number of officers. Your responses are recorded and will automatically downloaded into our system.  Like the national assessment centre, this will be assessed against the competencies and values framework.  If you are successful at this stage, you will be invited to attend the National Assessment Centre for this process.

Stage 3 – Those successful at the in-force sift will then be invited to attend the Direct Entry National Assessment Centre hosted by the College of Policing which will take place between the 19th June 2019 and the 3rd July 2019.

Stage 4 – Those candidates who are recommended at the National Assessment Centre will then be considered by their chosen force against vacancies available. 

Candidates can only apply to one force and must select who they are applying to in the application form.
